–3A head full of seaGoodnight kisses, but Henry cannot sleep. His head is full of fish and whales. So he grabs his crayons, yellow, green and blue, and draws a fine submarine with a periscope too.
–5A watery glowThe drawing shimmers and sparkles and starts to grow. Waves lap gently across the bedroom floor. The hull gleams like treasure and the hatch clicks open. 'Let's go!' cries Henry.
Glug, beep, dive!Inside, the seats feel like sponges. The engines go GLUG! The dials go BEEP! And down dives the submarine, down to the deep.
The coral reefFirst stop: a bright coral reef, a garden of colours beyond belief, with ribbons of weed and seahorses drifting at seahorse-y speed. Cecil presses his nose to the glass.
The shoal of fishA shimmering shoal swishes by, a thousand small fish like stars in the sky. They all turn together: left, right, up and down. Cecil barks twice and spins on the spot.
The sea turtleA wise old sea turtle paddles past, with a shell like a shield, not too slow, not too fast. She winks one kind eye as Cecil waves a soft paw.
The dolphinsDolphins leap in silvery streaks, clicking and whistling their happy-day squeaks. They swoop and loop and race all around, and Cecil joins in with a happy 'Awoo!'
The octopusAn octopus wiggles her eight curly arms. Then, flash! She turns pink, then purple, then blue. Cecil scrunches his face and tries it too. He stays the same colour, as far as you can tell.
The sharkOut of the shadows a shark cruises along, with a fin like a sail and teeth like triangles. But we are safe in our submarine. Cecil gulps, then gives a brave little grin, and the shark smiles back.
The jellyfishJellyfish drift like lamps in the night, glowing and pulsing with soft fairy light, rising and falling like balloons on a breeze. Cecil's eyes fill with light.
The shipwreckAn old sunken ship sleeps on the sand, with a mast and a wheel and a chest close at hand. The lid creaks open, and inside is one shiny gold bone! Cecil's eyes go wide.
The deep darkDown, further down, where the water turns black. The submarine wobbles and Cecil holds tight. 'Don't worry,' says Henry. 'Look, there's a light!' An anglerfish lantern glows gentle and bright.
The whaleOut of the deep swims the biggest of all, a great gentle whale who makes everything small. She sings a long song, so deep and so low, a lullaby made for the seas long ago.
MoonbeamsUp they float, where moonbeams shine through like a curtain of silver, and a million small bubbles wink upwards like diamonds. Henry sits quietly. Cecil sits too. Some sights are so wonderful, words simply won't do.
–28Home to bedHenry yawns. The sub turns for home, shimmers and shrinks back into the drawing. He climbs into bed, Cecil curls at his feet, and Mum and Dad peek through the doorway as they dream all through the night.
